Thread or spider veins are a common problem amongst many women & men and whilst they do not present a medical health risk they are unsightly and therefore unpopular. They can be caused by hormones, pregnancy, smoking, excessive sun exposure or can be hereditary. They are visible as a deep red and bluish colour and are usually found on the lower leg, thighs and back of knee’s where there is greater body weight pressure.
Visible thread veins can impact on a person’s confidence which is a shame due to the fact that it is an easily treated condition. This technique requires a chemical called sclerosant to be injected into the veins using a very small needle.
Sclerosant is a chemical which damages the inside of the vein. Initially the vein looks bruised but eventually the vein fades and disappears.
Following treatment a bandage is applied to compress the veins followed by a stocking for a week.
